With summer coming, I always look forward to a new disc with a New Orleans sound. "Dog Tracks" from Michigan ’s The Fabulous Horndogs, is such a find. One could be critical of a recording on the market with all cover songs, but you do an injustice if you look at this band only from that position. These are very good tracks. The ten songs are superb and certainly among the best compositions by, among others, Jimmy Reed, Professor Longhair, Otis Spann, Junior Wells, Johnnie Johnson, and James Cotton. A mix of New Orleans funk and R&B, the opener, "For You My Love" gives a sample of the tone of the whole disc, which brings to mind the work of the Funky Meters. In other songs The Fabulous Horndogs fuse blues and funk with roots and catchy melodies, while in "Red Beans" and "Must've Been The Devil" they rock intensely. The tracks were all recorded at Interlochen Public Radio Studios in Michigan with the flawless production of Tim Wire. He created an atmosphere in which The Fabulous Horndogs could take best advantage of a very traditional sound, but the band also presents a feeling of ease and fun that makes this disc very enjoyable. It is also noteworthy that the tight rhythm section plays literally as one. The ballads are riveting, such as "Blues As Blues Can Get" and "Moon Blues", with the beautiful guitar work from Mike Marois making these songs entirely satisfying. "Dog Tracks" is thus an especially attractive disc of funky music from the warm south. A very nice summer souvenir!
